Embroidery machines do not read standard image files like JPG or PNG. They require specific stitch files that contain commands for stitch coordinates, thread trims, color changes, and needle stops. Here are the most common formats:
Top Embroidery File Formats
- EMB: The native format for Wilcom digitizing software. It contains full vector design outlines and stitch properties, making it the best format for editing and resizing.
- DST: The industry standard Tajima format. It is readable by almost all commercial embroidery machines, containing only stitch coordinates and commands.
- PES: Brother's native format, highly popular for home and semi-commercial embroidery machines.
- EXP: Melco format, another widely used commercial format that reads simple stitch data.
Always keep a copy of the original .EMB file if you plan to make edits in the future, but send the .DST or .PES file to your operator for production.
