Graphics are divided into two main categories: Raster and Vector. Raster graphics are pixel-based images made of thousands of tiny colored squares. Common raster formats include JPG, PNG, and GIF. When you scale a raster image up, it loses quality and becomes blurry or pixelated, making it unsuitable for large-scale printing or clean embroidery digitizing.
Vector graphics, on the other hand, are mathematical calculations that define points, lines, curves, and shapes. Common vector formats include AI, EPS, SVG, and PDF. Since vectors are based on math rather than pixels, they can be scaled up to billboard size or down to a business card without losing a single pixel of clarity. For embroidery, screen printing, and brand logos, vector files are the industry standard.
For websites and social media, raster formats (PNG, JPG) are great. However, for embroidery digitizing, merchandise printing, apparel printing, and physical signage, vector files are mandatory to ensure sharp edges and clean reproduction.
